Incorporating Your Heritage Into Your Wedding Reception

In FUN Ideas, Reception Venues, Wedding Planning, Wedding Tips and Ideas

Where do we start?  This is a question that many couples (brides & grooms) will ask when they start considering all of the aspects of their wedding reception.  Some couples like to base their wedding reception around a place that is special to them, or a theme/common interest.  Other couples will plan based on a specific color palette or particular item that they definitely want to incorporate into the décor.  The desired tone/ambiance (formal or informal) of the event can also be the platform for the remaining details like set up, décor, food and beverage, etc.  Another idea that can really make your wedding reception unforgettable for your guests and meaningful to you and your family is to integrate your cultural heritage into the reception!  Most cultural backgrounds have several types of traditions or specific elements that can be incorporated easily and will definitely be noticeable.  Everything from your reception decorations (especially centerpieces/flowers), to the food and drink served, music for the evening, and party favors…can all reflect your heritage.  If you and the groom are from two different backgrounds, you could even utilize aspects from each cultural heritage and possibly have a particularly unique fan-fare, as well as unite the two families!  Since St. Patrick’s Day just passed, I did a little research into the traditions for an Irish wedding reception and was pleasantly surprised at all of the fun ideas to choose from!  Some of my favorites were:  using pots of shamrocks as centerpieces, gold (chocolate) coins for favors, utilizing the native Irish flowers such as violets, hydrangeas, bells of Ireland, daises, Irish orchids, ferns, Burnet roses, and primrose.  Irish cocktails such as the Irish Highball, Irish Lady Champagne punch, and Irish Seaman can be served to enhance authenticity…and having plenty of Irish whisky and Guinness on hand is a must!  Including Irish blessings/sayings on the table tents and or menu cards is also a nice touch.  There are numerous resources to help you find information about how you can integrate your cultural heritage into your reception.  These ideas and countless others can quickly add a little pizzazz to an event that will always hold a special place in your heart!

We had Irish touches in our wedding ceremony and reception. At the ceremony we had the Irish Blessing in the programs and we had a unique unity candle with a beautiful Irish saying. During dessert at the reception guests enjoyed Irish Coffee and each couple took home a bottle of Irish Meade at the end of the night. Thank you for posting this!!
