Ice Sculptures for Your Wedding
Wedding reception venues often include an in-house full service catering department to accommodate your food and beverage needs, however….wouldn’t it be tremendous if they could also assist you with a one of a kind piece of decor as well? One of the most distinctive and widely popular accents to formal or extravagant events is an ice carving. Ice carvings have been around for years, always making a splash in the wedding reception scene due to their versatility and natural ability to captivate an audience. Ice sculptures (or carvings) can be purely decorative or uniquely functional. A talented culinary expert will be able to carve ice into designs of virtually anything. Here at the Sioux Falls Convention Center, we are fortunate to have an Executive Chef who can carve just about anything you can dream up! He carves ice for almost every wedding reception we host here….and has done beautiful standard designs like swans, monograms, wedding rings, hearts, and wine racks, to school mascots, animals and even an 8 ft. fire truck! Sculpting the ice is a difficult task for numerous reasons. The ice is a volatile material, and requires controlled surrounding temperatures / conditions during the carving and designing stages. The actual ice blocks must be carefully selected because the quality of the water and freezing process determine the quality (transparency) of the sculpture when it is finished. Ice can add flare to the presentation of cold foods (like shrimp cocktail), and can even be carved into an actual bar if desired! Another sensational option is to go with an ice luge. An ice luge is basically an ice carving with a track in it that liquid can be dispensed through. They are generally used for an alcoholic beverage, however could also be incorporated with a non-alcoholic beverage. Guests will definitely enjoy the interactive element and entertainment of an ice luge! A recent wedding we hosted at the Sioux Falls Convention Center utilized their ice sculpture as a piece of the room decor (just as you entered the room, so it had a huge impact as it was the first thing their guests saw). Our Executive Chef Yancy Erickson suggested an ice vase, and the couple loved the idea! Their florist sculpted a piece to be featured “IN” the ice carving. The result was just stunning! If you would like to discuss how the Convention Center can help you to amaze your guests by incorporating a custom ice sculpture that reflects your taste/personality, please give me a call today!
