Fall, summer, spring or winter?   What time of year is the most popular for wedding receptions?  Traditionally, June is the most popular month for weddings, followed by August, September, October and May.   Booking the wedding reception venue should be one of the first arrangements made after a couple is engaged, because lack of availability can frequently become an issue, especially for wedding receptions with more than 200 guests.  Booking the reception site should ideally be done 10-12 months in advance of the date, and it seems that more and more couples are even booking 14 months out.   The time of year for your wedding reception affects various aspects of the event.  Everything from décor, wedding colors, attire, and availability of flowers to the cost associated with such items can all be attributed to the date selected.   Some venues have peak seasons, when more events are taking place, so rental costs can be higher than during slower times.   The majority of wedding receptions take place on Saturday evenings; however Friday evening receptions can sometimes offer a break in price as well.  If you are working on a tight budget, it is in your best interest to be prepared to be flexible with the date.   When you are discussing cost with the sales individuals from the venue, do not be afraid to ask questions about the possibility of negotiating costs or if there are any times/dates available where rental fees/costs might be lower. Some venues may not be able to discount prices; however it still does not hurt to ask the question.  Tying in a theme to your wedding reception can also be fun and appropriate for certain times of the year.  Here at the Sioux Falls Convention Center, we have hosted several themed wedding receptions that have turned out fabulously!  Planning a wedding reception over a holiday weekend is also an idea that can be beneficial not only with lower costs, but also giving your guests another day to travel in for the event. It is always in your best interest to look at all options before committing to a date and or venue, in order to achieve the desired result of an unforgettable event!
